Costa del Sol runs from the Costa Tropical south The breakup of Al-Andalus into the competing Taifa kingdoms helped the expanding Christian kingdoms, namely Castile that would become the main driving force in the Reconquista. The capture of the central city of Toledo in 1085 largely completed the reconquest of the northern half of Spain. After a Muslim resurgence in the 12th century, the great Moorish strongholds in the south fell to Christian Spain in the 13th century—Córdoba in 1236 and Seville in 1248—leaving only the Muslim enclave of Granada as a tributary state in the south. Also in the 13th century, the kingdom of Aragon, still ruled by the Catalan count of Barcelona, expanded its reach across the Mediterranean to Sicily. Smart, cosmopolitan and just minutes from the coast, Bilbao is a great place for students. The University of Deusto is one of Spain's most prestigious private universities and was founded by the Jesuits in 1886. It is located directly across the river from the Guggenheim, Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, several public parks and jogging and biking paths running the length of the city along the Nervion. Students will find Bilbao to be beautiful, easy to get around and an ideal place to study. Valencia (population 800,000), Spain's third largest city, is located on the Mediterranean coast approximately 200 miles south of Barcelona. Although Valencia has a rich history, it is often referred to as one of Spain's more modern cities. Students will be captivated by the "City of Arts and Sciences," a masterpiece of modern-day construction featuring attractions such as the Planetarium.
