San Sebastián (Pop. 182,930), or Donostia as it is known in Basque, is located just 20 kilometers from the French border. It was founded in 1180 as a small fishing village and has been an important vacation destination since the late 1800s when it was adopted as the summer home for Madrid's royalty. Madrid university is organized into seven schools (called facultades), which include: Philosophy and Arts, Psychology, Law, Science, Business and Economics, Education, and Biology. In addition, it has administrative services; a sports center; the Institute of Educational Sciences, Music and Languages; and a primary school. Upon arrival in Toledo, a local guide will meet students and showcase every corner of this medieval city, including the cathedral, Santo Tomé Church with the most famous Greco’s painting “El Entierro del Conde de Orgaz” (Note: The Alcazar cannot be visited until 2008 due to construction) and the synagogue. The next day will include a visit to the area of the convents and a tour of one of its churches, San Roman. After visiting Toledo, students will understand its reputation as the City of the Three Cultures. Students also take advantage of this duty-free shopping site before heading for el Puerto de Santa María. This beautiful town in the province of Cadiz is the place where Columbus met the owner of the flagship Santa Maria, Juan de la Cosa, its captain in 1492. This trip also includes a visit to one of El Puerto’s famous sherry wineries. El Puerto de Santa María is well-suited to producing this unique wine due to its climate and chalky soils, with help from a special ageing process called solera. Students will learn everything about the production of sherry and even have the opportunity to taste it. The city of Suel ceased to be mentioned at the beginning of the Middle Ages. After several centuries, the name of the settlement changed from Suel to Suhayl, which became the name of the castle and surroundings during the Arab occupation. Most of the area was however used as pasture for the Moorish rulers’ camels.
